Chris Webber - Detroiter, Birmingham Country Day alum and estranged University of Michigan star - will now play for the Detroit Pistons, a team with some internal turmoil, but it could make them play with more urgency and distract them from their egos.Speaking of which, Captain Chauncy Billups didnt’ think the Pistons needed him, or anyone else, to win a title.
“I think what we need,” Billups said, “we already got.”

“He’s one of the great players,” Billups said of Webber. “I still think he can play at a high level with the best of the best. If that did happen, I’d be happy. It increases our chances and makes us that much more lethal.” — Detroit Free Press

That was before the deal was finalized. They can definitely use him since Billups is injured.

The Pistons will pay Webber $450,000 for the rest of this year which is nothing by NBA standards. Of course, the Philadelphia 76ers just paid him $38 million not to play for them, so his finances should be in order.

Webber is not the player he once was, but he’s a great passer, a good shooter and productive rebounder for his size. And he’s an upgrade to Nazr Mohammed.
Perhaps Webber wanted to go back to Detroit to play for his home crowd and make some reparations for that errenous timeout he called which caused Michigan to lose to UNC back in the 1993 NCAA Championships. Just think, if he wins an NBA Title with Bad Boys then he can nicely tie up his legacy as a winner.
