Recap by Bill Simmons: The Vegas NBA All Star Game

It was a great all star weekend, the highlight being the Dick Bavetta and Charles Barkley foot race.  The actual game on Sunday night could have been more competitive.  What I thought was interesting was Kobe’s pre-game’s comments that his back was a little stiff.  I saw him walking around gingerly in his warm ups, and low and behold he scores 30 points and takes the MVP trophy.

Also, a must read is Bill Simmons article on the weekend. Check it out below.

ESPN: Page 2 : Welcome to the hip-hop Woodstock

After four nights of what will eventually be remembered as the Hip-Hop Woodstock, the atrociously sloppy NBA All-Star Game made complete sense. What a strange weekend. There was gambling and partying and Vegas and basketball — four of my favorite things — with a fashion convention and Chinese New Year happening as well, which meant Vegas was throwing three blockbuster weekends at once. There were so many big-time celebrities in town, a rumored Michael Jackson cameo came and went without a single shrug. So many parties happened that it was impossible to keep track of everything.

Arenas Talks But Can’t Walk

Arenas promised a 50 point win against the Trailblazers since Nate McMillan had a hand in him not making the USA Basketball Team. Unfortanely, a manchild named Jarret Jack shut him down using an interesting strategy “With a guy like him, Kobe or LeBron, the easy way to guard him is don’t let him get the ball back when he passes it.”  Arenas scored a measly 9 points in the matchup. Hibachi? More like Yellow Fever.

Sixteen losses in a row. That’s without Paul Pierce.  And that’s one for each of those shiny gold trophies the Boston Celtics have been lording over the rest of the NBA for all these years.

Here is Nike’s Second Coming Commercial Featuring Juelz Santana, beat by Just Blaze.

Kobe is really not the feature player in this ad, Lebron James is seen more. Also, Rasheed Wallace is not shown making any basketball moves. Its a great video though.

Ron Rothstein addressed the jeering from the crowd Sunday after forward Antoine Walker contributed to two late turnovers in the loss to the Mavericks. “Antoine always plays hard,” he said. “The fans may not like some of the shot selection. Sometimes that’s questionable. But Antoine plays very, very hard. I don’t think we’ve ever had a problem with Antoine’s wont to win.” — South Florida Sun-Sentinel

In case you missed the State of the Union Address, Dikembe Mutombo was honored as inspirational story of an immigrant that went to Georgetown University and then became a star in the NBA. Bush welcomed the Congo native to America, calling him the “Son of Congo.” I think its his smile and finger wagging that really helped all these years.
